چکیده

Radiation dose and image quality for paediatric protocols in a biplane x-ray system used for interventional cardiology have been evaluated. Entrance surface air kerma (ESAK) and image quality using a test object and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) phantoms have been measured for the typical paediatric patient thicknesses (4–20 cm of PMMA). Images from fluoroscopy (low, medium and high) and cine modes have been archived in digital imaging and communications in medicine (DICOM) format. Signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), figure of merit (FOM), contrast (CO), contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) and high contrast spatial resolution (HCSR) have been computed from the images. Data on dose transferred to the DICOM header have been used to test the values of the dosimetric display at the interventional reference point. ESAK for fluoroscopy modes ranges from 0.15 to 36.60 μGy/frame when moving from 4 to 20 cm PMMA. For cine, these values range from 2.80 to 161.10 μGy/frame. SNR, FOM, CO, CNR and HCSR are improved for high fluoroscopy and cine modes and maintained roughly constant for the different thicknesses. Cumulative dose at the interventional reference point resulted 25–45% higher than the skin dose for the vertical C-arm (depending of the phantom thickness). ESAK and numerical image quality parameters allow the verification of the proper setting of the x-ray system. Knowing the increases in dose per frame when increasing phantom thicknesses together with the image quality parameters will help cardiologists in the good management of patient dose and allow them to select the best imaging acquisition mode during clinical procedures. 0031-9155/08/154049+14$30.00 © 2008 Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine Printed in the UK 4049

Are Radiation Exposure Levels Used in Cardiology Dangerous?

Background: The number of interventional cardiology procedures performed has increased rapidly over the past years. While these procedures help physicians avoid using highly complicated invasive methods, it usually leads to high levels of exposure to ionizing radiation of both patients and cardiologist. The dose received by the cardiologist during interventional cardiology procedures is determi...

Evaluation of Maximum Patient Skin Dose Arising from Interventional Cardiology Using Thermoluminescence Dosimeter in Mashhad, Iran

Introduction The increasing practice of interventional fluoroscopy in diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular disease has risen attention to improve radiation protection of patients and cardiologists in these relatively high dose techniques. Therefore, nowadays there is an emphasis on the measurement of radiation dose received by patients and cardiologists arising from the relevant procedures...

Efficacy of Increasing Focus to Film Distance (FFD) for Patient’s Dose and Image Quality in Pediatric Chest Radiography

Background: Increasing the x-ray focus to film distance (FFD) has been advocated as an effective method to reduce the patients’ radiation dose. The aim of this study was to investigate the efficacy of this technique in patients' dose and image quality in pediatric chest x-ray.Material and methods: Sixty pediatric patients were x-ray imaged at FFDs of 100 and 130 cm. Dose measurements were perfo...

Staff dose assessment from coronary angiography

Background: Interventional cardiology procedures such as coronary angiography (CA) and percutaneous transluminal coronary angiography (PTCA) has been increased recent years. The purpose of this study was to measurement of effective dose to cardiology staffs who operate near the patient and are exposed to non-uniform radiation field due to patient scattered radiation. Materials and Methods: This...
